Theme of the conference

The theme of the conference is ?University librarianship: an academic challenge and opportunity. It is comprised of the following sub-themes:

* Recruitment, training and retention in university librarianship
* Future of professionalism of university librarians
* Contribution to the university governance
* LIS curriculum development
* Emerging trends in open access initiatives
* Quality management in libraries
* Meeting challenges in funding
* Security issues in libraries
* Access to information and copyright law
* Library management Systems and Digital Library initiatives
* Reaching offsite and differently-able learners

Call for papers

We invite the submission of high-quality and original papers that have not been published earlier. The submitted papers will be reviewed by a panel of experts on the basis of the originality of the work, the validity of the results, chosen methodology etc. on the themes proposed. The papers outside the suggested sub-themes will be accepted if it is related to the conference theme.

Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) is getting ready to launch an elaborate programme to celebrate its Golden Jubilee year in 2010. The main function of the Golden Jubilee celebrations will be held on the 6th of October 2010.

The third Achievers Colloquium of ULA was held on Friday, 12th of February 2010 displaying valuable achievements experiences and researches obtained by 11 ULA members. It was a revelation of great commitments and contribution to the librarianship of ULA members.

Dr. (Mrs.) W. Seneviratne, President ULA inaugurated the ceremony with a brief introduction of the program. Prof. Rohan Rajapakse, Chairman/SCOLIS the Chief Guest mentioned that the university librarians are to be harnessed by education qualification, professional standing and by research to cater the upcoming demand from the academia and to face challenges that prop-up from the ICT based technological changes. Further he emphasized that the librarian of a university has to play different roles as a teacher, lecturer, mediator, technologist, interior planner, entertainer, marketer, counselor, mentor etc?and these multiple roles should be inculcated within a university librarian to a run this important learning support resource, the library, in an effective manner.

Dr. Janaka Liyanagama, Open University of Sri Lanka, the Guest of Honor of the event stressed the importance of acquiring and getting acquaintance with new technology for improving library services; therefore planning of such service is the prime duty of the University Librarians and the dynamism of such service is always depend upon the dynamic attitudes of the custodians, that is librarians. Further he brought in the university librarians as innovators, knowledge sharers as well as researchers and he stated that he is very happy to see their enthusiasm to serve the users with newly projected ideas.

Presentations were ordered in three sessions as Projects of success (Achievements), Experiences gained and Research and Review papers. Rapporteurs of the three presentation sessions were Dr. (Mrs.) P.Wijetunga, Acting Librarian, University of Colombo, Mrs. C. M. Abegunasekara, Senior Assistant Librarian, University of Kelaniya and Mrs. T. Arulnandhy, Librarian, Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

Third Achievers Colloquium was ended up by declaring the Best Achiever 2009/2010 Award to Mrs Sajeewani Somaratne, Assistant Librarian, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo
